Start where the car is now
When a car has sat too long on a Stockport drive, in a garage bay, or outside a workshop, the easiest plan is not to overthink it. Begin with the car exactly as it stands. Look at whether it rolls, whether the keys are available, and whether a recovery truck can get close enough to load it without blocking neighbours or other vehicles.
That first look saves time later. A flat battery, seized wheel, locked gate, or narrow access can change the plan more than the car’s age does. If the vehicle is tucked behind another one, parked nose-in, or sitting in a cramped yard, note that early rather than finding out when the collector turns up.
Clear the things you still need
Before anything leaves, go through the cabin, boot, glove box, and under the seats. The obvious items are phones, wallets, coats, and sat navs, but smaller things are often the ones people forget. Think about parking permits, service papers, dash cams, tool kits, child seats, chargers, and any envelopes that were left after a school run or work trip.
If the car has become a storage place, give yourself a little more time than you expect. A family car can hide clutter in door bins and seat pockets. A work van can still hold chargers, business cards, gloves, and loose equipment. Once the vehicle goes, those items are harder to recover than they look at first glance.
If you need to remove private plates or keep documents back, deal with that before the handover starts. It is much easier to settle those details while the car is still on your own space than when it is on the back of a truck.
Keep the facts simple
A straightforward sale or scrap handover works best when you have the basics ready. Have the registration number to hand. Know the exact location of the vehicle. Be clear about whether it starts, whether it moves, and whether anything major is missing, such as wheels, a battery, or the catalytic converter.
Those small facts matter because they change how the job is handled. A non-runner in a locked garage needs a different approach from a car that can be driven to a waiting truck. A vehicle with damage, missing parts, or no spare key should be described plainly, not dressed up. That keeps the arrangement realistic and avoids delay on the day.
If the car is registered in more than one name, or if you are dealing with a company vehicle, sort out who is allowed to release it. A quick check now is easier than a dispute at the kerbside.
Make the handover easy on the day
On collection day, leave the vehicle easy to reach. Move other cars if you can. Unlock gates. Give clear directions if the property is on a busy road, in a shared yard, or tucked away behind other buildings. If the truck needs room to load, that space should be ready before it arrives.
It also helps to keep the keys, paperwork, and contact number together. Many delays happen because one item is in the kitchen, another is in the boot, and someone is still trying to find the right envelope. A neat handover is usually faster, calmer, and less likely to need a second visit.
If the car cannot be collected as first planned, say so early. A missing key or blocked access is not unusual. It is simply better to mention it before the driver sets off than after.
Finish with the space, not the worry
Once the vehicle is gone, check the spot where it sat. Make sure any loose rubbish, old mats, or forgotten paperwork has been cleared away. If it was parked on a drive, in a business yard, or by an estate wall, a clean space helps the disposal feel complete instead of half-finished.
The real aim is simple: clear the vehicle, keep what belongs to you, and leave the handover neat enough that you do not have to think about it again.
